Spice of Life... Redhat Emerging Technologies Project, Spice.
By: Jinx  on: Wed 24 of Feb., 2010 13:18 CST  (60 Reads)
Rip has been checking up on the Redhat SPICE Protocol that was bought when Redhat bought Qumranet back in 2008.

As was promised then, Redhat would Open Source the SPICE Protocol. Which is a protocol similar to RDP... The handy thing is that it also takes advantage of local resources on the client machine. So, 3D is possible even from a VM that is running off a remote Virtual server across the network!

Here is a demo of what is possible with this protocol.

So, to their word, Spice is being open sourced and is available here. Going to make for an interesting future for Redhat, LibVirt?, KVM and Spice.

By: Jinx  on: Mon 15 of Feb., 2010 22:55 CST  (57 Reads)
... and so MeeGo was born. Asides from almost sounding like Fried Noodles, it apparently what happens when both the Maemo and Moblin project merge, as per their first blog post:
Hi Everyone

I'm sure you've heard the news: Moblin and maemo are merging! We are taking the best pieces from these two open source projects and are creating the MeeGo? software platform. Both teams have worked for a long time to support the needs of the mobile user experience - and MeeGo? will make this even better. We want it to be fun, focused, flexible, technically challenging and ultimately, something that can change the world.
